Here are my two cents on student unions.

Why not?

Usually two reasons are given:

Ø  It’s a distraction.

Ø  And these Unions are violent.

So here is the impact of no unions.

Politics is a distraction for students. They should focus on study alone, it’s not the business of workers, and they should work day to day and never learn how to speak for their rights.

So here is what happens. Politics becomes the slang.

The one and only place from where future leaders come is “Jati Umra and Bhutto house.”

Student unions are a way to nurture future leadership. About the violence part, in public universities political parties have their own groups. They are Operating freely. Do they become violent? Yes. Have you seen any effort to abolish their hold from institution? No.

Because, it’s not about violence, it’s about threat they pose to status quo.

In Pakistan, politics is the privilege of the super privileged. You want to be a young political leader? Good, born in Bhutto family (on the right side)

Political elite has been very successful in keeping this privilege to themselves and one of the tools that have been used includes ban on political unions.

No, Does student unions get or can get violent? Yes! Are there remedies available for that? Again, Yes!

The answer is, not the ban but the right administration and management of these Unions. Imran khan had tweeted along these lines, restoration with proper management. Let's see what happens to this promise!
